"I hate Chennai heat" - Director Vasanth

Tourintalkies [May 28, 2008]

He's a director who has achieved considerable success in creating awareness about serious issues affecting the society. Vasanth is one person who has never hesitated to introduce newcomers to Kollywood. We caught up with the director to find out more about him.

If there's one thing you'd like to change in Chennai, what would it be?

The heat. It would be great if the climate here is like the climate in Ooty. The temperature shouldn't rise over 19'C.

Your biggest fan and worst critic would be...

My mentor K Balachander is my biggest fan. Ritvik Varun, my son, is my worst critic.

From director to hero...

His Anjaathe was a big success story for which he received accolades for his grip over his craft. Today, almost every actor wants to work with the man who gave new identities to Bhavana, Narain, Prasanna, Pandiarajan and Ajmal. But he has now turned as a hero with his next venture Nandalala, a film that stars a 6-year-old too. "Every actor I approached loved the script but felt it was not the right time to do this role of a mentally challenged man. So I decided to turn hero. But I am working with Surya in my next project," he confirms.

Five things Vasanth can't live without...

Films, music, books, good friends and good food.

Three most unforgettable days in your life

July 27, 1990. That was the day Keladi Kanmani was released. The day I won a national award is also a day I can't forget. Apart from these two days, I cherish the day way we celebrated the screening of Aasai for 250 days.

One embarrassing moment you'd like to forget...

The decision to discontinue my law course. I had enrolled myself for a law course but then I had to discontinue it as I had joined K Balachander as an assistant by then.
